1959: Eight fire companies battle a spectacular $500,000 fire that destroyed the C.S Wo-Van's Furniture Store at Alapa'i and Beretania streets.

1974: President Ford grants former President Nixon a "full, free and absolute" pardon for all federal crimes Nixon "committed or may have committed" during his terms in the White House. Nixon accepted the pardon, admitted he had made mistakes but did not acknowledge any crimes. Nixon resigned on Aug. 9.

1976: The Hawaii Islanders are kicked out of the Pacific Coast League for failing to fulfill contractual or financial obligations.

1979: The University of Hawai'i football team plays its first Western Athletic Conference game at Aloha Stadium. UH lost to Utah, 27-23.

2000: All nine Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees resign to circumvent Gov. Ben Cayetano's effort to remove them from office. In August, the Hawai'i Supreme Court ruled that the eight trustees were invalid after a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier that year that OHA's Hawaiians-only voting restriction was unconstitutional.
