Giovanna Aguilera is particular about what she puts on her feet.

As a runner who logs approximately 45 miles per week training for The Honolulu Marathon, Aguilera has put her feet into the care of Ray Woo for 15 years.

Aguilera met Woo when he was working at the Running Room in Kapahulu. Woo has since opened Runners HI in 'Aiea, and Aguilera has followed her feet to the store, which has been in business since 2003.

"Ray is a very caring man (who) listens to your needs about running (and) training," said the owner of Nails by Gio in Makiki. "(He) helps you select the best gear."

Aguilera, who once suffered from sciatica, said she relies on Woo's knowledge to fit her properly for shoes to avoid injuries.

Helping customers find the correct running shoes is the goal of Woo and his staff.

"About 50 percent of my customers are beginners," Woo said. "I measure each person's foot using a measuring device, then I have them stand and I look at their arch size (length) and (arch) height."

Woo also evaluates new customers' foot biomechanics by having them walk, using the shoes they wear into his store.

"This way I can determine if their feet pronate (rotate in), supinate (roll out), or have a neutral stride," he said.

Woo will recommend a pair of shoes suitable for his customer's gait to ensure shoes fit properly to prevent injury. To assure that all customers receive consistent fitting and service, Woo says that his four employees "are trained to fit and size each customer properly using (the) same method."

Because Woo receives many runners with foot problems and other running-related injuries, he works with several podiatrists.

Runner's HI offers a large variety of running shoes (including running accessories) as well as trail runners, volleyball and walking shoes and outdoor sandals and aquatic shoes.
