Homelands briefing draws 700

Advertiser Staff

About 700 people on the state Department of Hawaiian Homes waiting list gathered at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama for a briefing on the East Kapolei I development.

About 350 families will be chosen to receive lots for the largest Hawaiian Home Lands development in state history at a selection meeting in October.

Families were briefed on the process for securing financial planning assistance, loans, and home ownership assistance.

More than 7,000 people remain on the Hawaiian Home Lands waiting list on O'ahu alone, according to Hawaiian Homes Commission chairman Micah Kane.

Kane said significant progress has been made to ensure every person on the waiting list receives a homestead. The department has awarded more than 2,000 lots in the past three years, he said.
