1948: The Army dedicates Tripler Army Hospital.
1983: A wrecking crew begins demolishing the 52-year-old Haleiwa Theatre despite demands by city officials that the work stop.
1985: Hawai'i Bishop Edmond Browning is elected 24th presiding bishop of the U.S. Episcopal Church.
1997: The Rev. Abraham Akaka, who for nearly three decades was pastor of Kawaiaha'o Church and rose to national prominence during the 1960s for his civil rights efforts, dies at the age of 80.
1998: In a blistering 58-page report, Attorney General Margery Bronster accuses Bishop Estate trustees of a pattern of self-dealing, illegal activities and abuse of power in managing the multibillion-dollar trust.
