Church fire followed other recent incidents

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wai'anae that caught fire today has been the site of two break-ins and incidents of vandalism over the last two weeks.

The fire to the gym, offices and a kitchen were reported after 12:30 p.m. today at 85-574 Plantation Road.

Fire officials have not estimated the amount of damage but said it was extensive. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The cause is under investigation.

Ruben Paet, president for the LDS stake that includes the church in Waianae, said vandals broke in twice over the last two weeks, threw paper around the church's offices and littered the gym with toilet paper.

The chapel opened in 1964, Paet said, and is home to a total of 500 members from the Maile Kai ward, Makaha ward and Waianae ward.
