Body of kayaker found floating off Big Island

Witnesses in the South Kohala district of the Big Island recovered the body of a man who had been floating off shore in three to four feet of water Tuesday afternoon.

The body was discovered around 4 p.m. in a bay between the Puako Boat Ramp and Wailea Bay, Big Island police said..

Police determined that the victim had launched his kayak from the Puako Boat Ramp and was last seen paddling south. An orange kayak was found washed ashore.

The victim has been identified but police are withholding his name pending notification of his next of kin.

The case has been classified as a coroner's Inquest and an autopsy has been ordered.
