1957: Standard Oil Co. announces it will build a $40 million refinery on Campbell Estate land at 'Ewa.
1964: The first concert is held in the new Honolulu International Center (now Blaisdell Center) concert hall.
1968: Hawai'i golfing great Ted Makalena dies at the age of 34, less than five days after being injured in a swimming accident in Waikiki. Gov. John Burns designated Sept. 28 as Ted Makalena Day.
1977: Kilauea erupts on its East Rift Zone. The flow burned its way through the rain forest mauka of the Kaimu Black Sand Beach.
1996: The last harvest at McBryde Sugar Co. on Kaua'i ends as the company, which had been in business since 1899, shuts down.
2000: Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. announces it is closing its Pa'ia Sugar Mill on Maui.
