Wahine soccer wins, 2-1

Taryn Fukuroku assisted on the tying goal then scored the game-winner with 1:27 left in double overtime as Hawai'i defeated Northern Arizona, 2-1, in a women's soccer match at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Kelli-Anne Chang also scored for the Rainbow Wahine (4-2-1).

Sarah Vallen scored in the 78th minute to give Northern Arizona (2-4) a 1-0 lead.

Chang scored four minutes later after Kristen Oshiro pushed the ball to Fukuroku, who sent a cross to the middle to an uncontested Chang. She fired a 10-yard shot into the right side of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.

Ambree Ako set up the game-winner, attacking the defense before slipping the ball to the right side of the box. Fukuroku took a few dribbles before taking a shot that bounced off the inside of the far post and into the goal.


SURFING

IRONS, POWERS WIN

Kaua'i surfers Andy Irons and Roy Powers won first-round heats in the Boost Mobile Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.

The first round was completed in 4- to 5-foot waves at Lower Trestles off San Clemente, Calif.

As first-round winners, Irons and Powers will receive a bye in the second round and be seeded in the third round.

Fellow Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr., Pancho Sullivan and Jamie O'Brien did not win their respective heats yesterday. They will have to surf in the second round, where eliminations begin.


VOLLEYBALL

BYUH RISES TO NO. 10

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team ascended to No. 10 in the Division II national rankings released yesterday.

The Seasiders (6-0), who were ranked No. 14 with 407 points last week, received one first-place vote and 556 points.


GOLF

TAKETA TAKES LEAD

Lance Taketa, of Hilo Municipal Golf Course, shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead in the Aloha Section TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship.

Shane Abe, of Oahu Country Club, is alone in second after shooting a 74 at Ko Olina Golf Club.

Joey Tadeo, of Mililani Golf Club, is third at 75 entering today's final round.


SOFTBALL

HILO TO HOST CLINICS

The Hawai'i-Hilo softball program will hold clinics for girls ages 8 through high school next month.

The Oct. 15 clinic will be held at Kamehameha Park in Kohala; the Oct. 22 clinic will be held at the UHH Softball Field.

Registration fee is $20, with the pre-registration deadline Oct. 13.
