Health department warns of E. coli threat in spinach

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Health is warning residents not to eat raw, bagged spinach after an outbreak of E. coli on the Mainland.

So far, there are no confirmed cases of illness in the Islands. On the Mainland, more than 50 cases have been reported.

The Health Department is also asking restaurants not to serve bagged spinach until further notice. Even if the spinach is cooked, it could still pose a danger to those who prepare it.

The warning does not apply to frozen block spinach or spinach grown locally. Anyone who feels ill after eating bagged spinach should consult a physician immediately.
