ISLE FILE
Donovan to do UH football TV

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Bowl executive director Jim Donovan has been hired as the color analyst for K5's telecasts of University of Hawai'i football games.

Donovan, 47, succeeds Doug Vaioleti, who served as lead analyst for three years. Vaioleti, a former UH offensive lineman, resigned to spend more time running his construction company, Real Builders.

Donovan is a former UH football player, graduate assistant and associate athletic director.

"I think he's a marvelous fit," said Jim Leahey, K5's play-by-play announcer. "He's played the game. He's helped run the UH athletic program for years. He knows the NCAA rules. He knows the TV rules. And he runs a bowl game, for goodness sake. You talk about a qualified person. He might be over-qualified for this job."

K5 is arranging for Donovan to join the broadcast crew for UH's Sept. 23 road game against Boise State.

SURFING

IRONS ADVANCES

Former world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i advanced to the fourth round of the Boost Mobile Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 6-foot waves at Lower Trestles off San Clemente, Calif.

Irons defeated Australia's Toby Martin, 17.07-15.06. Irons' two best waves received scores of 8.57 and 8.5.

Irons is the only Hawai'i surfer still in the contest. Roy Powers of Kaua'i and Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore were eliminated yesterday.

Defending world champion and current No. 1-ranked surfer Kelly Slater of Florida also advanced yesterday.
