What little No. 4 Kamehameha's defense gave up, Saint Louis quarterback Micah Mamiya took advantage of with an 11-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 14 seconds left to lead the No. 3 Crusaders to a 10-3 win last night in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season opener.

"It feels great," said Saint Louis senior defensive end Scott Smith, whose team improved to 4-0 overall. "Kam is a great team. We prepared well. Our coaching staff did great. Our offense came together in the second half and we played strong."

Mamiya, a junior, passed for 194 yards, but made his two biggest plays with his feet during a two-play, 43-yard drive for the only TD of the game. After taking over at the Kamehameha 43, Mamiya rushed for 21 yards. A personal foul penalty tacked on 11 more yards to the Warriors' 11.

On first-and-10, the Crusaders lined up three receivers to the right. From a shotgun formation, Mamiya faked a handoff to running back Devan Essner to the right and then took off to the left, sprinting untouched into the end zone to break a 3-all deadlock that stood since halftime.

"We saw when we go 'trips' to the right, all the guys stack that side," Mamiya said. "Only had one 'backer (on his left side) and all I had to do was beat him."

An Aloha Stadium crowd of 6,310 watched the Crusaders' defense register seven sacks, three by Smith. Saint Louis also had a fumble recovery, and an interception by Todd Nakano at the Saint Louis 1 with 1:22 left.

But the game wasn't sealed until Keani Nishigaya ran 57 yards from the Crusaders' 1 on second down. That put Saint Louis out of danger and allowed it to milk the clock by twice taking a knee.

The Warriors took a 3-0 lead on 38-yard field goal by Tyler Akao with 5:17 in the first quarter. During the drive, the Warriors saw an apparent 13-yard TD pass from Michael Hoke to Ian Bernardino nullified by a holding penalty.

Saint Louis tied the score with 1:02 left in the half on a 24-yard field goal by Kenton Chun. A 55-yard pass from Mamiya to Kulia Aiona put the Saints at the Warriors' 5, setting up the tying kick.

Kamehameha had golden opportunities to take the lead in the third quarter. From the Saint Louis 5, Crusaders' punter Jacob Barit bobbled a snap and had his punt partially blocked to the Saints' 15. But the Crusaders' defense held, forcing the Warriors to first try a 44-yard field goal by Akao that missed. A running-into-the-kicker penalty gave Akao another shot from 38 yards out, but he couldn't convert.

The Warriors also recovered a fourth-quarter fumble at midfield, only to come away empty because of the Crusaders' defense.

"We needed to do something when the defense was getting the ball for us," said Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza, whose team fell to 4-1. "But we just couldn't get anything going offensively."

The Warriors had trouble generating any kind of drive, being held to 25 yards rushing.

Saint Louis also labored because of the Warriors' defense. Mamiya was sacked twice, but managed to complete 14 of 28 passes.

Running back Kama Bailey rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, including an 80-yarder, to carry the Monarchs (2-2-1 overall, 1-0-1 ILH) to an ILH Division II victory yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

The Monarchs trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but turned the game around after an interception by cornerback Christian Vasconcellos set up Bailey's 3-yard TD run with 4:20 left in the half.

Bailey then capped an 11-play, 79-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run with no time showing on the clock. Wayland Sakamoto's PAT made it 14-10 at the half.

Like last week against Iolani, Bailey opened the first play from scrimmage in the second half with a long score, an 80-yard TD run that started left and ended with Bailey cutting back to the right sideline, where he received a key block from receiver J.J. Kaina at about the Damien 45 to allow the speedy back to reach the end zone untouched.

But the Monarchs nearly gave the game back, when a fumble set up Pac-Five's first score since the first quarter when Bryson Beirne hit Jordan Ho-Ching on a 36-yard post pattern with 8:57 left in the game.

Later in the quarter, the Wolfpack made a crucial first down on fourth-and-11 from their 37 when punter Troy Toyama gained 14 yards on a run to the left, catching the unsuspecting Monarchs with their backs to the punter trying to set up a return. The Wolfpack eventually faced a fourth-and-1 at the Damien 40, where Beirne came up inches shy on a first down after a sneak.

Damien thought it had an answer, when Bailey had an apparent 80-yard TD run nullified by a holding penalty on first down. The Monarchs failed to do anything in that series, which lasted 42 seconds after Pac-Five used two timeouts. Damien punted to the Pac-Five 12, where four incomplete passes gave the ball back to Damien, which took a knee on three plays to run out the last 1:44.

Damien defensive ends Kaimana Balanon and Lesao Iakopo had two sacks each.

It was the ILH season opener for Pac-Five (2-2, 0-1).
