McKinley turns back Castle in OIA, 12-9

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KANE'OHE — McKinley's defense held strong against a late first-and-goal situation and staved off Castle, 12-9, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action.

The visiting Tigers improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. Castle, ranked No. 9 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, fell to 2-3, 2-1.

The Knights got a safety to close to 12-9 with four minutes remaining after sacking McKinley quarterback Tilton Kaluna in the end zone. Following the ensuing free kick, they eventually earned a first-and-goal on the 4-yard-line, but a block-in-the-back penalty pushed them back to the 13.

After an incompletion, Bryson Ukauka threw a 7-yard pass to Jesse Humalon to give Castle second-and-goal at the 6. But an option keeper on third down went for only one yard, and Ukauka couldn't handle a wet ball on the fourth-down shotgun snap and the Tigers took over after a scramble for the loose ball with just under a minute remaining.

With the Knights out of timeouts, McKinley took a knee twice to run out the clock.

Castle scored on the game's first play from scrimmage, an 80-yard strike from Ukauka to Scott Keiter-Charles. The Tigers closed to 7-6 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter on Keawe Kalama's 1-yard plunge, but the extra-point attempt went wide right.

Kalama, who set up the touchdown with a 61-yard run, finished with 124 yards on 18 carries.

McKinley went up 12-7 with 4:41 left in the half on Kaluna's 74-yard TD run on a keeper.

Ukauka completed 23 of 40 passes for 245 yards.

The game was delayed for about 25 minutes as Tigers defensive back Joshua Ward was taken away by ambulance after a collision with teammate Josh Nakama on Nakama's second-quarter interception. Ward was able to move his arms and legs and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center for observation.
