American Savings settles fraud suit filed by customer

Advertiser Staff

American Savings Bank today settled a lawsuit filed by a 91-year-old customer who alleged that a bank employee defrauded her of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The state's third largest financial institution said it has reached a deal with customer Ada Lim but both sides declined to provide details of the settlement.

Lim alleged in an Aug. 2 lawsuit that Marilyn De Motta, a manager in American Savings' Hawai'i Kai branch, took more than $600,000 from her. American Savings' former security director Bert Corniel filed a similar Aug. 2 lawsuit alleging American Savings tried to cover up Lim's losses. Corniel's suit, which helped trigger an FBI investigation, is pending.
