  • Two experts in the area of political communications will speak at a meeting Wednesday of the local chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Speaking on "POLITICAL COMMUNICATIONS: Keeping the Media and Public Focused on Issues," will be Alan Eyerly, policy advisor at the state Department of Human Services, and John Hart, assistant dean, Hawai'i Pacific University, College of Communications. Eyerly was previously a news and features reporter for the Los Angeles Times and public information officer for University of California's Los Angeles and Irvine campuses. Hart worked at major radio stations and record companies, is a former debate coach, and serves as a media critic for local and presidential debates.   • "Strategies for a National Publicity Campaign: Getting YOUR Message Beyond Hawai'i" will be discussed by tech public relations expert Rob Kay at a seminar Wednesday, sponsored by the High Technology Development Corporation. A recognized public relations consultant with technology companies in Hawai'i and on the Mainland, Kay maintains relationships with journalists from the nation's top business and technology publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Jose Mercury News and Fortune.   • The Coral Reef Outreach Network will stage its Second Annual Hawai'i Living Reef Awards program Wednesday to recognize groups and individuals who have contributed to coral reef preservation statewide. The event is scheduled 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Radisson Waikiki Prince Kuhio Hotel. Among the nominees are local eco-nature tours, dive shops, shipping companies, whale organizations, government agencies and a federal marine debris program. The network is comprised of more than 40 state, federal, nongovernmental organizations and private-sector companies, which work to build public awareness of Hawai'i's coral reefs and their preservation.   • Sept. 25 is the reservations deadline for an upcoming Big Island conference on developing a health and wellness tourism industry on the island. The gathering is scheduled 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 5 at Mauna Lani Resort's Hale Hoaloha Pavilion. It will bring together travel and hospitality professionals; health and wellness practitioners; wellness travel operators, cultural practitioners, managers of spas, retreats, and bed and breakfasts; organizers of spiritual and educational adventures; and government officials. To be discussed will be best practice, standards, guidelines and long-term strategies for the emerging industry — as well as formation of a Hawai'i Island Association of Wellness Travel.
