HAWAI'I BRIEFS
YMCA begins pool construction

Advertiser Staff

The YMCA of Kaua'i has broken ground on an Olympic-size swimming pool and associated building complex, to be funded with a $3.3 million grant from the state.

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona presented a check yesterday to Mayor Bryan Baptiste and local YMCA officials. It will be the island's only 50-meter pool, and will allow the island for the first time to host state high school swim meets.

The pool complex is part of a larger athletic project that is to include a gym, batting cages and other facilities on a parcel of land between Kuhio Highway and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in Puhi.

Other funding for the project includes about $1 million in federal funds and $5.6 million to be raised from grants, private donations and other sources, said YMCA of Kaua'i president Patrick Childs.
