1870: Queen Kalama, widow of Kamehameha III, dies at age 53.

1889: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports "a great improvement is being made in the road that is to connect Kapi'olani Park with the extension of Beretania Street that passes Mo'ili'ili Church."

1925: The Advertiser reports on flights over Honolulu made by Navy Cmdr. John Rodgers in his PN-9-1 seaplane. The first flight was over Diamond Head and Koko Head, while a later flight circled over Pearl Harbor. Rodgers and his crew had made a nonstop flight earlier in the month from San Francisco to Hawai'i. They had run out of fuel a few hundred miles from Hawai'i and were missing for nine days. They were eventually rescued by a Navy submarine and towed to Lihu'e.

1928: The body of 10-year-old Gill Jamieson is found opposite the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at 11:30 a.m. Myles Fukunaga is arrested two days later. There were so many people mobbing the police station, the Fire Department turned streams of water on them. Fukunaga was found guilty and was hanged the following year.

1958: Thousands of Islanders pour through the gates of Old Plantation to see the Ward family home, which was constructed in the style of southern plantation homes. The Blaisdell Center now stands on the site.

1969: The Advertiser reports that Sen. Daniel K. Inouye met with Army officials to seek guarantees that no further nerve gas tests, which the Army reluctantly admitted took place in 1966 and 1967, be held in Hawai'i. Inouye also disclosed that the gas tested was in "weapon form," something the Army said earlier was not the case.
