Convention to spotlight self-determination, vote

Advertiser Staff

A policy roundtable on the direction of Hawaiian self-determination, a forum featuring gubernatorial candidates and a Native Voices and Rock the Hawaiian Vote Concert are among the highlights of the 5th annual Native Hawaiian Convention next week.

Sponsored by the nonprofit Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, the week-long event brings together at the Hawai'i Convention Center 300 organizations and 700 individuals in the name of promoting community development among Hawaiians. It is the largest such gathering for Hawaiians.

This year's theme is "Setting the pace - charting our course."

While the convention formally does not begin until Wednesday, a roundtable on Tuesday will include a discussion on policy issues facing CNHA and other Hawaiian organizations in light of the U.S. Senate's decision this past summer not to hear the Akaka bill that would have established a process allowing for federal recognition of Hawaiians, said Lilia Kapuniai, convention organizer.

The Friday night concert will feature Barefoot Natives with Willie K and Eric Gilliom, Makana and other musical groups. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Hawaiian Way Fund, which supports Native Hawaiian practices and knowledge in the Hawaiian community, and Native Votes Count 2006.

Another highlight is the Thursday luncheon featuring gubernatorial candidates.

To attend, contact CNHA at 521-5011 or at events@hawaiiancouncil.org.

Scholarships are available for students, kupuna, CNHA members, those outside O'ahu and others in need.
