Honoka'a High School senior Keisha Kanekoa, a two-time Advertiser All-State basketball first-team selection, has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Hawai'i in 2007.

Former Honoka'a coach Daphne Honma said Kanekoa, a 5-foot-6 point guard, chose UH over Pacific (Calif.) and also was being recruited by Boise State and Utah State. She visited UH this past weekend and made her commitment before returning home.

Kanekoa led Honoka'a to the 2006 Big Island Interscholastic Federation title and the past two Division I state semifinals.

The first day Kanekoa and other NCAA recruits can sign National Letters of Intent is Nov. 8, and college coaches are not allowed to comment on them until they receive the letters.

VOLLEYBALL

BYUH STAYS UNBEATEN

Michelle "Tuli" Peters, honored earlier in the day with her third Pacific West Conference Player of the Week award, hammered 20 kills as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Grand Canyon, 30-22, 30-18, 30-12, in a PacWest match last night in La'ie.

Noelle Filimoeatu added 10 kills, Lesina Funaki had 11 digs and setter LeeAnn Mapu contributed 45 assists as the ninth-ranked Seasiders improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest.

Tonya Rooth had eight kills and Ashley Handley added 10 digs for the Lady Antelopes (7-6, 3-1), who were held to a negative .024 hitting percentage.

Peters, a junior outside hitter from La'ie, had a career-high 26 kills in BYUH's victory over Hawai'i-Hilo on Saturday. She also had 31 digs, the third-highest total in BYUH history.

HILO DROPS TWO

Dominican University swept a doubleheader against Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday in Scotts Valley, Calif.

Dominican won the men's match 1-0, after taking the women's match 5-1.

The Hilo men's team (1-2) threatened to send the match into overtime but an apparent goal by Kyle Cabsin was disallowed because of a foul.

Vulcan goalkeeper Marc Fournier made five saves.

Healani Leite-Ah Yo headed in a corner kick by Kelly White to score Hilo's goal in the women's match.

The Vulcans (0-3) were credited with 10 shots, with Leite-Ah Yo taking three shots on goal.

Honolulu's Chris Lam lost his opening round singles match in three sets, but won in doubles yesterday at the Costa Mesa Pro Futures event.

Lam fell to Austria's Patrick Schmolzer, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Lam then partnered with Chris Surapolo, another former UCLA Bruin, to sweep Brad Pomeroy and Ryler Rizza, 6-1, 6-3.
