Two placekickers from Hawai'i recently had big weekends.

Mississippi Valley State freshman Zack Gilarski, out of King Kekaulike, made a game-winning 48-yard field goal with eight seconds left to help beat Alabama A&M, 23-20, on Saturday.

Also, Pasadena City College freshman center Latu Tupou, a 2006 Kahuku graduate, made the transition to kicker after two of the team's kickers did not make the bus trip. Tupou was 2 for 4 on extra points to help beat Santa Barbara City College, 40-35, on Sept. 9.

Twenty players from Hawai'i are listed on the Pasadena City College roster.

MORE FOOTBALL

  • California freshman defensive tackle Tyson Alualu (Saint Louis '05 of Honolulu) and senior defensive end Abu Ma'afala (Kamehameha '02 of Honolulu) recorded two tackles apiece in a 42-16 win over Portland State on Saturday.

    Sophomore defensive tackle Mika Kane (Kamehameha '05 of Honolulu) had one tackle.

    Portland State junior Brennan Carvalho (Kamehameha '04 of Kapa'a) started at left guard.

  • Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) junior starting tailback Chris Ahsing (Campbell of 'Ewa Beach) ran for 59 yards on eight carries before suffering an ankle injury in the second quarter in a 37-16 win over La Verne on Saturday. He will not be available this weekend when Whitworth Wisconsin-Stout Menomonie.

    Whitworth is ranked 17th in this week's www.D3football.com Top 25 Poll.

  • Grossmont College (El Cajon, Calif.) sophomore outside linebacker Derek Hinkley (Punahou '04 of Kane'ohe) recorded two sacks in a 30-10 win over San Jacinto on Saturday.

    WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Portland State sophomore Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05 of Waipahu) shot a final-round 73 to finish in a tie for 30th in the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic that was hosted by Colorado State and concluded Sept. 12.

    Morinaga shot 77-76-73—226, which matched her career best for a 54-hole event.

    WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

  • Hofstra junior setter Shellane Ogoshi (Roosevelt '04 of Honolulu) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week.

    Ogoshi totaled 123 assists this past week, averaging 11.18 per game over Hofstra's three matches where they went 2-1. She added a team second-best 36 digs.

  • Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior setter Anela Iseke (Kamehameha of Hau'ula) was an honorable mention selection as a Northwest Conference Player of the Week on Sept. 11.

  • Oregon State freshman setter Camilla Ah-Hoy (Kahuku '06) and freshman libero Tricia Yoshimura (Hawai'i Baptist '06) contributed to the Beavers' 30-18, 30-21, 30-26 sweep of Fresno State on Sept. 9.

    Ah-Hoy had 39 assists, seven digs, two block assists and two kills. Yoshimura had a team-high 14 digs.

  • Seattle Pacific senior libero Tiffany Butac (Hawai'i Baptist '03 of Pearl City) led all players with 25 digs in a 30-19, 30-18, 32-30 win over Western Washington on Saturday.

    Butac totalled 16 digs in a 30-14, 30-8, 30-20 win over Western Oregon on Thursday.

    MEN'S SOCCER

  • Bowling Green sophomore midfielder Justin Kim (Mililani '04) scored in a 4-1 loss to Wright State Sunday.

    Kim scored in the 21st minute, converting the goal in a scramble after a corner kick. It was his second goal of the season and his fourth as a Falcon.

  • New Mexico junior midfielder David Gualdarama (Kamehameha '04 of Wai'anae) scored in 68th minute of a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge on Sunday in the Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational.

  • Vanguard University (Calif.) sophomore midfielder Tom Culver (Maryknoll '05) scored in the 83rd minute of a 1-0 victory over Westminster College (Utah) on Saturday.

    Senior midfielder Christian Marston (Kapa'a) starts for Vanguard.

  • Northland Baptist Bible College (Dunbar, Wis.) sophomore Aaron Levi Debutiaco (Ma'ili Bible '05) scored with one minute remaining in regulation to help the team to a 3-2 overtime win over Lakeland University (Wis.) on Sept. 9.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • Oregon senior forward Nicole Garbin (Baldwin '01) scored with four minutes to play in a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga on Friday.

    Garbin needs just five more shots to become the first Duck to reach 200 for her career.

  • Westmont College (Santa Barbara, Calif.) sophomore forward Amy Lawson (Iolani '05 of Honolulu) was named the Golden State Athletic Conference women's soccer Player of the Week.

    Lawson recorded seven points in Westmont's 4-2 victory at Menlo last week, scoring a second-half hat trick and assisting on the fourth goal.

  • Azusa Pacific (Calif.) sophomore forward Sarah Yoro (Mililani '05) scored twice in a 4-1 victory over San Diego Christian on Friday.

    She scored her first goal of the season in the 50th minute on a pass from midfield by senior Taryn Apo (Baldwin). Her second came nine minutes later on a similar play, when senior midfielder Jolie Nitta (Mililani '02) played a long ball from midfield, where Yoro knocked it past the keeper again.
