TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Shark" debut, 9 p.m., CBS. Sebastian Shark (James Woods) is a slick lawyer. He often rescues people who are rich and guilty. Then — early in this hour — a case spins him upside down. Soon, he's working for the prosecution. This is a great role, bursting with ego, and Woods frolics in it. The counterbalance comes from Danielle Panabaker as his teen daughter. As his human side surfaces, Shark becomes a richly detailed character.

"Six Degrees" debut, 9 p.m., ABC. Each person, the saying goes, is six degrees of separation from anyone else. This show introduces several then slowly links them. Most fascinating is a young woman (Erika Christensen of "Traffic"), on the run and changing identities, for reasons not yet explained. Others range from a big-deal businesswoman to a top photographer who sabotaged his career. It takes a while but we start to care about their entwining lives.

OF NOTE

"Grey's Anatomy," 7 and 8 p.m., ABC. The season-opener displays careers in peril. Izzie broke all the rules in a futile attempt to get a heart transplant that would save her boyfriend Denny's life. "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" season-opener, 8 p.m., CBS. A Cirque du Soleil performer finds a body during his act. That puts Catherine in jeopardy.

"ER" season-opener, 9 p.m., NBC. The shoot-out in last season's finale left the emergency room in chaos. Tonight, staffers try to save Abby (who is pregnant) and Jerry (the giant clerk). Sam (Linda Cardellini) has jumped into the escape vehicle to be with her son. He was snatched by his dad, who was one of the three shooters.
