Cinema Italiano festival takes viewers on journey

"Singing Behind Screens," about a Chinese widow who becomes a pirate queen, will be screened Oct. 1.

"My Brother's Summer," about a young family whose lives are challenged by a pregnancy and then a miscarriage, shows Tuesday and Wednesday. Both contemporary Italian films are part of the third annual Cinema Italiano at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The third annual Cinema Italiano in Hawai'i, spotlighting contemporary Italian films, begins Tuesday at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Tickets are $7 general, $5 museum members per screening. The event is presented by the Friends of Italy Society of Hawai'i and Istituto Italiano di Cultura San Francisco. All films are subtitled. 532-8768.

The lineup:

  • "My Brother's Summer (L'Estate Di Mio Fratello)"; directed by Pietro Reggiani. 2005, 82 minutes.

    Young Sergio and his parents go to the country each summer, but his idyllic existence is interrupted at the news that he'll soon be having a baby brother. Then Sergio's mother has a miscarriage, and Sergio, overcome with guilt, comes to appreciate the meaning of brotherhood.

    8 p.m. Tuesday, 1 p.m. Wednesday

  • "Mario's War (La Guerra Di Mario)"; directed by Antonio Capuano. 2005, 100 minutes.

    Rebellious young Mario is placed in the temporary care of a young couple, Giulia and Sandro, and all three are tossed into turmoil.

  • "After Midnight (Dopo Mezzanotte)"; directed by Davide Ferrario. 2004, 92 minutes.

    Martino, the night watchman of the Mole Antonelliana (Museum of Cinema in Turin), assists Amanda, a young woman running from the police, and an unlikely romance begins.

    7:30 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 29

  • "Agata and the Storm (Agata E La Tempesta)"; directed by Silvio Soldini. 2004, 118 minutes.

    Romance comes to Agata, an engaging and popular bookstore owner, when a man nearly half her age woos her.

  • "Don't Tell (La Bestia Nel Cuore)"; directed by Cristina Comencini. 2005, 120 minutes.

    A 2006 Oscar nominee for best foreign-language film. Sabina seems to have the perfect life and a promising future, but all that disappears into nightmares and insecurity when she becomes pregnant.

    1, 4 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30

  • "Singing Behind Screens (Cantando Dietro I Paraventi)"; directed by Ermanno Olmi. 2003, 100 minutes.

    This drama is Inspired by the Jorge Luis Borges tale about a Chinese pirate queen, who, after her husband, a pirate admiral, is murdered, proceeds to ravage the coast of China. A great naval battle ensues as the newly ascended emperor challenges the widow.
