New blackout traffic lights are to be tested at 14 Honolulu intersections, the Sept. 22, 1943, Advertiser reported.

1943: First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited wounded soldiers here.

1955: The crewmen of two military transport planes report sighting an underwater volcano erupting about 365 miles west of Honolulu. The Navy's hydrographic office at Pearl Harbor said the eruption apparently was one of an epidemic of underwater disturbances reported in the Pacific in the last month.

1960: Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko visit Hawai'i on the start of a nationwide tour aimed at reaffirming Japanese-American friendship.

1963: Waikiki Shell is filled to capacity for a performance featuring Dame Margot Fonteyn, Rudolph Nuryev and other stars of the Royal Ballet Company of London.

1992: City Councilwoman Rene Mansho switches sides and the council in a 5-4 vote deals a fatal blow to the much-debated O'ahu rail transit project.
