The Sept. 23, 1889, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on a luau in Waiçalae given by Paul Isenberg Jr. for the Stars and Honolulu baseball clubs.

1895: Honolulu has a "housecleaning day." Three hundred to 400 people take part, disinfecting and cleaning "every nook and corner" in the city.

1961: The Puna rift zone erupts and three villages are threatened.

1970: Honolulu is one of four sites for the world premiere of the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!" The pre-show festivities drew about 3,000 people outside the Waikiki No. 1 Theatre.

1986: United Airlines announces that it will end its unprofitable Hilo service on Dec. 1. United had flown into Hilo for 21 years.
