'Swords stop Grand Canyon

Trina Kauliakamoa had 23 kills to lead Chaminade to a 30-18, 30-32, 22-30, 30-24, 15-11 victory over Grand Canyon University in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at McCabe Gym last night.

Chaminade is 9-3 and 4-1 in the PacWest. Grand Canyon is 6-7 and 4-2.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS

Sophomore Malia Pires had 14 kills and 11 digs to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 30-27, 33-31, 30-25 PacWest victory over Notre Dame de Namur at St. Andrews Priory last night.

HPU is 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the PacWest. Notre Dame de Namur is 7-11 and 0-5.

HPU starter Barbara Martin was forced to sit out after taking a ball off her right eye on a block attempt.


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

PENN, HUGHES SET

BJ Penn of Hilo and Matt Hughes of Illinois both made the weight limit for today's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight world championship bout.

Penn, the challenger, weighed 166 1/2 pounds; the champion Hughes was 170. The maximum weight in the welterweight division is 170.

The bout will take place at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, Calif..

Penn is 10-3-1, including a victory over Hughes by rear-naked choke submission on Jan. 31, 2004. Hughes is 38-4, including 5-0 since losing to Penn.


GOLF

UH-HILO GOLFER LEADS

Freshman golfer Logan Goulding of Hawai'i-Hilo shot 74-69—143 yesterday and was tied for the lead after the first day of the St. Martin's Invitational at Tumwater, Wash.

Goulding, of Tracy, Calif., is at 1-over with Jarin Todd of Sonoma State (69-74) at the par-71 Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Grand Canyon (292-293) leads at 17-over 585. UH-Hilo is five strokes back after a 300-290—590. Brigham Young-Hawai'i is last in the 10-team field after a 323-334—657.

The tournament ends today.

MIYAJIMA FINISHES 50TH

Maui's Shayna Miyajima shot a 8-over 80 yesterday and finished tied for 50th at the LPGA Sectional Qualifying School at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Hyun-hee Moon of Seoul, South Korea, shot a 3-over 75 and won medalist honors at 2-under 286. The top 32 golfers advanced to the final qualifying tournament.

Miyajima finished at 14-over 302. Kailua's Bridget Dwyer (77) finished tied for 72nd at 306.


SOCCER

BYUH TOPS CHAMINADE

Heidi Bushman scored two goals and Emily Mearns and Jill Haar each added one to lift Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 4-0 women's soccer victory over Chaminade yesterday at Saint Louis School field.

BYUH is 3-1, Chaminade 0-1.


BASKETBALL

UH'S 'TWILIGHT 'OHANA'

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's basketball teams will open fall practice, Oct. 13, with "Twilight 'Ohana" at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The annual event begins at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.

The teams will be introduced at 8:15 p.m., followed by a 3-point shot contest, slam dunk competition and scrimmages.

RAINBOW SAILOR THIRD

University of Hawai'i's Shandy Buckley finished third yesterday in the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Singlehanded Championships at Marina Del Rey, Calif.

Stanford's Carolyn Young (26 points) and Even Brown (29) finished first and second, respectively. Buckley scored 32 points.
