Mililani rushes past 'Aiea, 37-20

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

'Aiea — Jordan Torres rushed for three touchdowns and 224 yards to lead Mililani over 'Aiea, 37-20, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West football last night at 'Aiea stadium.

It was a crucial win for the Trojans (4-2 overall, 2-2 Red West), who needed the win to stay in playoff contention.

"It's a big win," Mililani coach James Millwood said. " 'Aiea has always given us a hard time the last couple of years."

It was a tough loss for Na Ali'i (3-3, 2-2), who continued to be hampered by injuries. They started the game without quarterback Alfredo Higa (elbow infection) and all-purpose player Lofa Liilii (ankle), who is also an emergency quarterback.

Later in the game, 'Aiea lost backup quarterback Keenan Naeole, who left the game with a clavicle injury after making a second-quarter pass.

"It's one of those years where the injury bug is hitting us left and right," 'Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "For us, the quarterbacks going down was the key."

'Aiea had to use another all-purpose player Daniel Liilii at quarterback and he had not taken a snap all season long. Because of his limited experience at quarterback, 'Aiea was limited in the type of plays it could call.

With the game tied at 14, Mililani got a 28-yard field goal from Colin Lund and a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Rustin Funakoshi to take a 24-14 lead into the half.

Torres opened the third quarter on the second play from scrimmage with a 67-yard touchdown run against an obviously worn-down 'Aiea defense which had a number of players playing two ways.

'Aiea closed to 31-20 with 7:52 left in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Cereston Ioapo. But Mililani quickly responded with Torres' third touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run.
