Business briefs: Hawaii Biotech wins national award

Aiea-based Hawaii Biotech Inc. has won its third Tibbetts Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration given to organizations and individuals "judged to exemplify the very best in scientific innovation and community impact."

Leonard Firestone, chief executive of Hawaii Biotech, is scheduled to receive the award on behalf of the company tomorrow at the Small Business Innovation Research Awards Ceremony in Washington D.C.

Hawaii Biotech, Inc., the state's leading private biotechnology company, is recognized as a leader in the development of vaccines for emerging infectious disease. These include seasonal and avian influenza, West Nile encephalitis, and Dengue Fever.

Scholarships totaling $7,500 awarded to four O'ahu students

College scholarship funds totaling $7,500 were awarded to four O'ahu college students as part of Kahi Mohala and Sutter Health network's Van R. Johnson Sutter Scholars program.

The scholarships aid deserving students heading into their 2006-2007 academic year whose parents and grandparents are employees of Kahi Mohala Behavioral Health.

The recipients are: Jedidiah Bayudan, a sophmore at Hawaii Pacific University studying human resources management; Andrew Choy, a junior at University of Hawaii in the pre-med program; Cherisse Smith-Robello, a pharmacy major at University of Hawai; and Blayne Yamada, a senior at University of Hawaii studying human resources management.
