Brush fire continues to burn on Maui

Advertiser Staff

KAUPO, Maui — A brush fire in a remote district at the 5,300-foot elevation of Haleakala continues to burn today, and so far has claimed up to 6,000 acres.

A handful of residents who voluntarily evacuated their properties yesterday have not returned home yet, officials said. Pi'ilani Highway is closed between mileposts 23 and 26 to allow for firefighting operations.

Approximately 60 personnel from county, federal, state and private groups are battling the fire, which started Saturday night. Three helicopters are making water drops over the burning areas.
