Flash flood watch downgraded to warning for O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has rolled back on an earlier flash flood warning for O'ahu, which ended at 8:30, and has replaced it with a flash flood watch that will remain in effect through this evening.

"We're still seeing some shower activity over the windward slopes of most islands but it looks like the heavy showers have ended for now," said lead forecaster Ray Tanabe.

Water levels in most of the streams monitored by the Weather Service are on the way down, resulting in the change from a flash flood warning to a flash flood watch, he said.

"There is still a possibility of heavy rains, and we will re-issue the flash flood warning if necessary," Tanabe said.

Showers will likely favor the windward and mauka areas of all islands today, as well as some leeward areas of the Big Island, Tanabe said.

Rainfall totals recorded by the National Weather Service for the six-hour period between 2 and 8 a.m. this morning include 4.08 inches at Wilson Tunnel; 2.80 inches at the Lyon Arboretum in Manoa Valley; 2.31 inches in upper Nu'uanu; 2.29 inches in Pacific Palisades; and 1.28 inches in Mililani.

Despite the heavy rain, the Honolulu Fire Department had not received any calls as of 8:15 a.m for help with weather related problems, dispatchers said.
