HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Traffic accident victims identified

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office yesterday identified two people killed in separate traffic crashes Sunday as Gregory Dixon, 27, and Solomon Moses, 54.

Dixon, who was stationed at Schofield Barracks, was killed in a 2:17 a.m. crash on Sunday on Kunia Road near 'Anonui Street. Police said his 1991 Chevrolet four-door sedan veered off the road and struck a utility pole. Dixon, the car's lone occupant, was ejected and crushed by the car as it rolled over.

Moses, a Waimanalo resident, was killed when the car he was driving went off the road on a curve on Hihimanu Street and slammed into a wooden utility pole at 10:50 p.m. Sunday

The traffic death toll on O'ahu this year stands at 69, compared with 58 at the same time last year.

HALEAKALA FIRE BURNS 6,000 ACRES

A brushfire in a remote district at the 5,300-foot elevation of Haleakala near Kaupo has burned up to 6,000 acres.

A handful of residents who voluntarily evacuated the area Sunday had not returned home as of yesterday afternoon, officials said. Pi'ilani Highway is closed between mileposts 23 and 26 to allow for firefighting operations.

About 60 people from county, federal, state and private groups battled the brushfire, which started Saturday night. Three helicopters were making water drops over the burning areas.

NO ENTRANCE FEE FOR HALEAKALA

Haleakala National Park will waive its entrance fee Saturday in observance of National Public Lands Day.

The usual fee is $10 per vehicle and $5 per person on foot, bicycle or motorcycle. Both passes are good for seven days.

National Public Lands Day, started in 1993, is meant to encourage the public to explore national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other federal lands.

Coincidentally, Haleakala is seeking public comment on proposed changes to its entrance fee structure. The seven-day pass would be changed to a three-day pass, although the price would not change.

The rest of the fee structure would remain the same, including the $25 annual "Tri-Park Pass" good for unlimited visits to Haleakala and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park on the Big Island.

An additional $15 buys a Golden Eagle Pass that allows entrance into any federal recreation area nationwide.

Haleakala is one of 38 units in the National Park System that retains 80 percent of revenues generated in the park. The money has been used for such projects as a summit restroom, trail maintenance and exhibits.

Comments about the fee structure may be sent to: Fee Program Comments-Superintendent, P.O. Box 369, Makawao, HI 96768.
