Advertiser Staff

A Kane'ohe Bay-based Marine was killed in Iraq yesterday, Marine Corps Base Hawai'i officials said.

Pfc. Christopher T. Riviere, of Cooper, Fla., died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Iraq's Al Anbar province, officials said in a news release.

Riviere, a rifleman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment 3rd Marine Division, was reportedly providing security when he received the small arms fire.

Riviere, 21, joined the Marine Corps in September 2005, and reported to Hawai'i in March 2006. He deployed to Iraq earlier this month. His awards include the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Riviere is survived by his mother.
