Moped rider dies after hitting truck

A moped rider died yesterday after hitting a parked vehicle in Kona.
Police said Scott Fienup, 47, was driving a Honda moped east on Huli Koa Street in the Kohana Iki industrial area when he struck the back of an unoccupied 2005 Dodge pickup truck at about 8:30 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. at Kona Community Hospital.
Fienup's death is the 28th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year compared with 29 a year ago.
MAN TRIES TO USE PHONY MONEY
Big Island police said an unidentified man has been trying to pass counterfeit $10 bills at Hilo businesses.
He is described as Asian, in his 20s, with a slim build and shoulder-length blond hair. He is often seen wearing a baseball cap. The man attempted to use phony money at two different locations in the Kaumana area on Thursday.

HALEAKALA FIRE JUST ABOUT OUT
Firefighting efforts were winding down yesterday on the southern slopes of Haleakala, where a brushfire had consumed about 6,000 acres.
The few residents in the remote Kanaio area who had been asked to evacuate Sunday returned to their homes Monday evening, Maui fire officials said.
Pi'ilani Highway was reopened, with periodic closures to accommodate helicopter operations. The road had been closed since the fire broke out late Saturday night to make room for firefighting maneuvers.
County, state, federal and private agencies contributed staff to the effort to contain the blaze, which is believed to have been intentionally set.

SUSPECT SEIZED IN SLASHING OF TIRES
Police Monday morning arrested an 18-year-old Wahiawa man suspected of slashing the tires of 10 cars parked in the Downtown area.
Police said a witness reported seeing the man cut the tires about 3:30 a.m. on five vehicles in a parking lot at 666 N. King St. and one vehicle parked on the street near the parking lot.
The witness said the suspect then crossed the street and slashed the tires of four more vehicles.
Police were called to the area and found the suspect a short time later.
PEARL CITY
WOMAN INJURED, HUSBAND ARRESTED
A 21-year-old Pearl City man was arrested Monday evening after he allegedly punched his 19-year-old wife in the face.
Police were told the two had been arguing when the husband struck the wife. Officers went to the home and determined the wife's nose had been broken.
They arrested the husband about 6 p.m. on suspicion of second-degree assault.
