Onosai, who graduated this past year from Word of Life, said a coaching change Bruins throws coach Seilala Sua left the team to pursue other opportunities led to her decision to stay home. She was granted a full release from UCLA and contacted UH coaches last week.
She was offered a full ride scholarship to compete for the Rainbows.
"It's a bittersweet situation. I cried when my coach left," Onosai said. "I guess it all worked out. At least I'm home and I got a scholarship."
Onosai is a three-time state discus champion and a two-time winner in the shot put. She also earned all-Interscholastic League of Honolulu honors in volleyball and basketball.
