Careena Onosai will join UH track and field

Former Hawai'i prep track and field standout Careena Onosai has decided to stay home to compete in throwing events for the University of Hawai'i instead of her original choice, UCLA.

Onosai, who graduated this past year from Word of Life, said a coaching change — Bruins throws coach Seilala Sua left the team to pursue other opportunities — led to her decision to stay home. She was granted a full release from UCLA and contacted UH coaches last week.

She was offered a full ride scholarship to compete for the Rainbows.

"It's a bittersweet situation. I cried when my coach left," Onosai said. "I guess it all worked out. At least I'm home and I got a scholarship."

Onosai is a three-time state discus champion and a two-time winner in the shot put. She also earned all-Interscholastic League of Honolulu honors in volleyball and basketball.
