Florida firm picked to develop Kapolei retail center

By Andrew Gomes

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has selected a Florida firm led by a retail industry veteran to develop a regional shopping center in Kapolei anticipated to open a first phase in 2009.

The department reached a preliminary deal with DeBartolo Development LLC, a Tampa-based company chaired by Edward J. DeBartolo Jr., former owner of the San Francisco 49ers football team and son of shopping center pioneer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., to lease 67 acres from the agency for the project.

DeBartolo Development is working on lining up tenants for the retail center but has yet to determine the size of an initial phase or its design.
