ISLE FILE
State cheerleading tourney Jan. 21

Advertiser Staff

The Zippy's/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Cheerleading Championships have been moved from Dec. 10 to Jan. 21, the HHSAA announced yesterday.

The tournament, which will take place at the University of Hawai'i's Stan Sheriff Center, has traditionally been held in March but was moved up to December in the summer after concerns were raised about the length of the cheerleading season.

However, HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said most O'ahu hotel rooms already are booked for the weekend of Dec. 10 because of the Honolulu Marathon that day, making travel plans difficult for the Neighbor Island teams.

Meanwhile, the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball Championships has been scheduled for May 9 to 12 at UH's Les Murakami Stadium. Final approval from UH had been pending.

Also, the Island Movers Track and Field Championships at Maui's War Memorial Stadium was pushed back a week to May 18 and 19, avoiding a conflict with the baseball state tournament.
