HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Makai parking banned on street

Advertiser Staff

"No Parking" signs were installed last week along the makai side of Portlock Road because of concerns that emergency vehicles could not get through the narrow street, city officials said.

The signs were erected at the request of a resident, said Paul Won, chief of the city Department of Transportation Services traffic engineering division.

An inspection by the fire department followed the complaint, and it was determined that an emergency vehicle would have difficulty getting through the narrow road if parking were allowed on both sides, Won said.

MAN KILLED IN TRUCK-SUV CRASH

A 38-year-old Lihu'e man was killed yesterday in a broadside collision between a sport utility vehicle and garbage truck in Wailua, at the junction of Kuhio Highway and North Leho Drive.

Police said a Garden Isle Disposal truck hit a 2004 Suzuki turning left onto Kuhio Highway about 4 p.m. The man killed was a rear-seat passenger in the SUV, which was driven by a 64-year-old woman.

The woman was treated for injuries and admitted to Wilcox Hospital, police said. The driver of the disposal truck was not injured.

The highway was closed in both directions for about two hours.

The fatality is the 12th this year on Kaua'i, which had nine total fatalities in 2005.
