Parachutist pulled safely from ocean

Advertiser Staff

Coast Guard, Emergency Medical Services and Honolulu Fire Department rescue teams all responded to report that a downed parachutist went into the ocean this morning at around 9:30 a.m.

However, the diver apparently made it out of the water with no injuries before rescuers arrived.

"I think by the time everyone arrived the guy was fine," said HFD Captain Sigmund Oka.

"Bystanders just helped him out of the water and everything was good. He was checked out by EMS and he was OK."

Guy Banal, who operates Pacific International Skydiving Center, said, "He was just drifting in the wind and he went in the water. When that happens we always call 911 to have someone pick them up in case they can't swim."

Banal said the man came out of the water on his own and was unharmed.
