Schneider, Hernandez lift UH past San Jose State, 6-0

Joshua Schneider pitched a five-hitter and Landon Hernandez drove in three runs to help Hawai'i beat San Jose State, 6-0, today to avoid a sweep of the Western Athletic Conference series at Les Murakami Stadium.

Schneider (3-1) allowed a walk and struck out two, and was supported by five double plays for UH (22-11 overall, 3-3 WAC). It was his first complete game of the season.

Steven Vidal (1-2) allowed four runs, eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts in six innings for the Spartans (18-12 overall, 3-3 WAC).

Hawai'i took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, Kevin Macdonald singled to left and took second on Vinnie Catricala's single to center. Macdonald scored on Hernandez's ground single that sent Catricala to second. Nate Young popped out to the pitcher on a bunt. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Jon Hee fouled out to first to end the inning.

The Rainbows scored three in the sixth. Kris Sanchez doubled with one out and one out later, scored on Catricala's single to right. Hernandez followed with a two-run home run to left, his first of ths season to increased UH's lead to 4-0.

Hawai'i tacked on two more in the seventh against reliever Greg Shannon.

Hee, Derek DuPree and Justin Frash hit successive singles to load the bases to set up Brandon Haislet's two-run single to make it 6-0.
