UH-Hilo softball falls in semifinals of tournament

Jessica Gaumnitz pitched a five-hitter and Cal State Stanislaus scored three runs in the top of the first en route to a 4-1 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a semifinal game of the 20-team NCAA Division II Mizuno Tournament of Champions at Turlock, Calif.

Rita Argott had three hits and an RBI, and Jennifer Arnold doubled in two runs in the first to lead the Warriors (35-8). Gaumnitz, who struck out three and walked three, improved to 18-1.

Miki Asamura had two hits, including an RBI double, for the Vulcans (28-7).

Cal State Stanislaus fell to third-ranked Humboldt State in the title game, 2-0.

In other tournament games:

i Leo Sing Chow had a pair of RBI singles and Tracy Ryan pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts as Hilo beat Chico State, 3-1, in a quarterfinal game.

Vanessa Badosa added two hits and Asamura had an RBI single for the Vulcans.

Allison Smith had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats (12-24).

i Lizzy Prescott pitched a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Humboldt State beat Hawai'i Pacific, 2-1, in 12 innings of a quarterfinal game.

HPU's Sherise Musquiz also pitched the distance, allowing the go-ahead run to score in the top of the 12th on an infield single that brought home Nancy Harbeson from third.

Jessica Adolph had two hits, including an RBI double in the third, for the Sea Warriors (22-8).

i Cal State Monterey Bay beat Chaminade, 10-2, in a Bronze Division game. The Silverswords fell to 7-30.
