UH-Hilo hires Atkinson as women's volleyball coach

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo hired Bruce Atkinson today, the school's third women's volleyball coach in three years.

Atkinson replaces Carla Carpenter-Kabalis, who was interim coach last sesaon. Julie Morgan coached the Vulcans for three seasons, resigning in July 2006.

"Bruce has a history of transforming mundane volleyball programs and quickly turning them into successful and competitive programs," UH-Hilo athletics director Kathleen McNally said in a statement. "He also has a strong academic background and brings a whole new perspective to the Vulcan athletic department."

The Vulcans were 5-16 last season.

Atkinson started the Texas-Brownsville program last season and guided it to a 28-11 record. He also coached at Dana (Neb.) College and Baldwin Park (Calif.) High School.

Atkinson graduated from in 1993 from Brigham Young-Hawai'i with a degree in exercise science and obtained his doctor of chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences in 1996.
