Quake-damage reviews to end

Advertiser Staff

Big Island Public Works officials on April 30 will end the safety inspection program for buildings damaged by the Oct. 15 earthquakes.

The county issued 67 "red tags" indicating buildings were unsafe to occupy, and 30 are still red-tagged.

County inspectors issued an additional 227 yellow tags, meaning the use of those buildings was limited because of damage. Another 1,388 buildings had only cosmetic damage and were issued green tags.

Owners who received green, red or yellow tags have until September to seek waivers of some county requirements under a program created to help owners complete restoration work.
