UH women take two from Santa Clara in softball

Dominant pitching propelled the University of Hawai'i women's softball team to a pair of 7-0 victories over host Santa Clara Tuesday.

In the opener, Justine Smethurst pitched a three-hitter, struck out a career high 13 and did not issue a walk.

Brandi Peiler batted 3 for 4 and drove in two runs, Clare Warwick and Tyleen Tausaga each had two hits, and Kathryn Grimes doubled in two runs for the Rainbow Wahine.

In the second game, Courtney Baughman pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Tanisha Milca hit a two-run homer and Warwick hit a solo shot. Milca, Peiler, Kate Robinson and Alana Power each had two hits as Hawai'i improved to 37-8.

Angela Kabanuck batted 3 for 6 to lead the Broncos (7-32) in the doubleheader.
