DUI arrests up 14 percent on Big Island

Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving from March 27 to April 2, bringing the 2007 total to 333 compared with 291 at the same time last year.

Four of the drivers arrested last week were involved in accidents and one was under the age of 21.

DUI roadblocks and patrols on the Big Island are continuing, police said.

So far this year there have been 548 major accidents compared with 666 during the same period in 2006, a decrease of 8 percent.
