Community meetings focus on mayor's recycling plan

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann will hold a series of community meetings this month and in May to review plans for a curbside residential recycling program and other ways to manage O'ahu's trash.

Hannemann has proposed a recycling pilot project for homes in central, windward or east O'ahu, and has said he hopes such a program could eventually operate islandwide.

The plan is controversial, however, because it would include a $10 monthly fee for homes that want to continue having trash picked up twice per week.

The upcoming meetings — all scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. — will include new information about O'ahu's waste composition, and a cost-and-benefit analysis of various recycling options, Hannemann said.

Here are meeting dates and locations:

  • Monday — at Mililani Mauka Elementary

  • April 24 — Kaiser High School

  • April 25 — Kahuku High School

  • May 8 — Mission Memorial Auditorium

  • May 10 — Windward Community College

  • May 21— Kapolei Hale
