Advertiser Staff

A groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the second phase of the building of 826 housing units and two community centers, plus the renovation of 972 housing units and the demolition of 791 existing ones, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Ford Island.

Forest City Military Communities is partnering with the U.S. Navy on the project.

Tot lots, play lots, multipurpose courts, picnic areas, benches, dog parks and walking trails are all part of the project, which will create two new neighborhoods on Ford Island featuring 231 new homes for senior enlisted and officers. Improvements will also be made to 222 historic housing units in seven Navy neighborhoods, including Nob Hill and Luke Field on Ford Island.

A Navy news release said the project, once completed, will include 4,476 homes in 25 neighborhoods for Hawai'i-based Navy families.
