Rainbows shut out Santa Clara in softball, 7-0

Justine Smethurst struck out a career high 13 batters and threw her seventh shutout of the season as No. 21 Hawai'i defeated Santa Clara, 7-0, in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader today at Santa Clara, Calif.

Hawai'i is 36-8. Santa Clara is 7-31.

Smethurst allowed three hits and walked none.

Valana Manuma walked with the bases loaded to bring in Tyleen Tausaga to give UH a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Clare Warwick singled and scored on a double by Tausaga in the third for a 2-0 lead.

The Rainbow Wahine added three more runs in the fourth, including on a two-run double by Katie Grimes.

Warwick and Kaulana Gould scored on a two-run single by Brandi Peiler in the seventh.
