Missing man found safe in La'ie

LA'IE — A 71-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease who had been missing for nearly three days was found safe this evening by one of the volunteers who were conducting a large-scale search for him.

Tevita "David" Mohetau was exhausted but otherwise in good condition, Fire Capt. Bobby Chang said. Mohetau was taken to Kahuku Hospital for observation, Chang said.

Mohetau wandered away Saturday night from La'ie Inn, where he and his wife Janice had been staying. He was last seen behind the McDonald's restaurant next door.

About 6:30 p.m. today, a member of a search party led by Chang spotted Mohetau in 6-foot-tall "guinea grass" in an undeveloped area on the Kane'ohe side of Polynesian Cultural Center. The person who found Mohetau was Troy Smith, a professor at nearby Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.

Yesterday, police used a dog and helicopter in the second day of searching in the La'ie area for Mohetau. He was wearing baggy khaki shorts, a red aloha shirt and slippers.
