Downtown area road construction projects under way

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

Two road construction projects near downtown Honolulu that started this week aim to help improve traffic flow, according to the state Department of Transportation.

A project at the intersection of Pali Highway and Vineyard Boulevard will extend the left-turn lane along Pali Highway in the south-bound direction an additional 300 feet. The intent of the project is to provide a longer stacking lane for drivers turning left onto Vineyard, allowing drivers heading straight on the Pali to continue towards downtown.

During the Pali Highway work, there may be possible left lane closures along the highway from H-1 to Vineyard Boulevard in either direction for related construction and tree relocation.

The other project, at the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Pacific Street, will add left-turn phasing to the traffic signals to improve traffic flow for Pacific Street motorists.

Currently, drivers attempting to turn left from Pacific onto Nimitz must compete with other oncoming side-street traffic, which can create a backup of traffic onto Nimitz.

Lane closures are expected along Nimitz Highway in either direction and/or along Pacific Street in either direction for trenching work as part of the traffic signal improvements.

Construction for both projects, which cost $1.3 million total, is expected to run through July.
