Molokai advisory group to discuss innovation, robotics

Advertiser Staff

The Governor's Moloka'i Council of Advisors will meet next week in Kaunakakai to talk about innovation, robotics and energy efficiency.

The public is invited to attend the meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Kulana O'iwi, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands/Office of Hawaiian Affairs Conference Room, 600 Maunaloa Highway, Kaunakakai.

Carilyn Shon, energy conservation and program manager for the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, will present the "Hawai'i Energy Plan and Opportunities for Moloka'i Residents."

In addition, Art Kimura, of the Hawai'i Space Grant Consortium, will discuss how Moloka'i students can engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education through involvement in robotics.

Kimura is helping Hawai'i schools participate in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competitions. Promoting these skills among Hawai'i students is a key part of the Lingle administration's "Innovation Initiative."

Hawai'i will host a FIRST Regional Robotics Competition, March 27 to 29, 2008, at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
