Big Island police investigating fatal one-vehicle crash

HILO, Hawai'i — A fatal single-vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway between Pu'uanahulu and Kailua temporarily closed the busy highway this morning.

Fire officials said a Mazda pickup truck apparently overturned shortly before 7:23 a.m. between the 25 and 26 mile markers on the highway, prompting police to close the road at the intersections of Waikoloa Road and at Ka'iminani Drive.

Fire rescue workers found the truck in the south-bound lane with an apparently lifeless man pinned in the driver's seat.

The truck was "severely damaged," and appeared to have rolled and scattered its contents along the roadway, fire officials said.

Fire crews delayed removing the body from the car because police wanted to photograph the intact scene of the crash, according to a statement from fire officials.
