An early-morning fire caused an estimated $320,000 in damage to a Kalama Valley area home, destroying about 50 percent of the residence. No one was injured.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Frank Johnson said a family of four was awakened shortly after 5 a.m. by "loud pops" in the back of the house in the 1200 block of Honokahua Street.

The mother of the two children, ages 7 and 1, got everyone out of the house, Johnson said.

"They did the right thing and got out right away," he said. "The fire spread quickly. The husband was smart and went back with a garden hose and tried to fight the fire safely from the outside until it got too hot."

Six engine companies, two ladder companies and a battalion chief responded at 5:15 a.m., he said. By 5:30 a.m. the fire was under control.

"It caused about $250,000 in damage to the home and another $70,000 in damage to their belongings. Thankfully everyone got out safe."

Neighbors gathered outside as fire engines filled the street.

Garth Fernandez, who lives down the street, said neighbors were trying to help the family.

"My wife brought them some food," he said. "It was a shock. I woke up to the popping sounds and then all the commotion outside. The flames were high. Your first thought is you just hope everyone is safe."
